The effects of home access to technology on computer skills: Evidence from a field experiment
نویسنده
چکیده
The overwhelming reliance on technology in the workplace and classroom, and for communications and acquiring information suggests that computer skills are and will continue to be important for labor market success. This paper examines whether disparities in access to home computers are limiting the acquisition of computer skills, and thus potentially resulting in negative economic consequences for those being left behind in the digital age. Estimating the causal relationship between home computers and computers skills, however, is fraught with selection bias. To address this problem, I use data from the first-ever randomized field experiment providing free computers to students. Participating students were randomly selected to receive free computers to use at home and their computer skills were measured at the end of the second academic year. I find that the treatment group of low-income students receiving free computers has significantly higher levels of computer skills than the control group of low-income students not receiving free computers. The "intent-to-treat" estimates indicate an increase in high-level computer skills of 17 percentage points, and the LATE estimates indicate a range of 19 to 23 percentage points. The results are robust to estimation strategy, measurement of the dependent variable, and inclusion of different sets of controls. The benefits appear to be the strongest among young, minority, low-income, and female students.

Use of Computer and Internet in Agricultural Extension as perceived by Extension Workers
The purpose of this study was to determine computer and Internet use in agricultural extension by Extension Workers (EWs). This study used a descriptive-correlational design.Population for the study consisted of all extension workers (N= 320) in Isfahan Province, Iran. A stratified sampling technique and census was used to select EWs (n = 200). Overall, findings indicate that EWs have access to...

متن کاملA Sensor-Based Scheme for Activity Recognition in Smart Homes using Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence
This paper proposes a scheme for activity recognition in sensor based smart homes using Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. In this work, opinion owners and their belief masses are constructed from sensors and employed in a single-layered inference architecture. The belief masses are calculated using beta probability distribution function. The frames of opinion owners are derived automatically ...

متن کاملEffects of the Spacer Length on the High-Frequency Nanoscale Field Effect Diode performance
The performance of nanoscale Field Effect Diodes as a function of the spacer length between two gates is investigated. Our numerical results show that the Ion/Ioff ratio which is a significant parameter in digital application can be varied from 101 to 104 for S-FED as the spacer length between two gates increases whereas this ratio is approximately constant for M-FED. The high-frequency perform...
